A blog might seem like a strange addition to a graphic design and hand-lettering portfolio. Its presence here can be justified in two ways:
First, Scripture is always so much more than the limited amount that can fit on an 8x10 print, or even a massive canvas. I want my social media presence as well as my portfolio and future store to at least scratch the surface of what the verses mean in context. When you read a verse on your wall, I want it to bring to mind the entire chapter, even the greater arc of the story of Scripture. Take, for example, the phrase "to the praise of His glory." This could evoke the whole sentence from which it's taken:
"In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory." —Ephesians 1:11-12 (ESV)
And even more than that, it could evoke the richness and beauty of all of Ephesians 1, in which Paul outlines many of the blessings we receive if we trust in Christ.
I don't want to just hand-letter God's Word in such a way that it's pretty to look at, I also want it to come with truths that are beautiful to dwell on. I don't believe there is anything wrong with hand-lettering by itself, but Scripture becomes rich and three-dimensional when taken in light of its context and meaning. That's why you'll often see my posts will be accompanied by some form of writing—a summary of the context, a word definition, a quote from a theologian, or a snippet from a commentary.
Second, it is the perfect marriage between my background in biblical studies, my history with writing, and art. I am excited to see the interests that have always seemed like disjointed side-hobbies come together!
