As I tell you about my most favorite project yet, I have to confess to you: I owe almost all of the creativity to the client, who also happened to be a very dear friend from college.
This large floral piece contains lyrics from The Beatles' In My Life. It was commissioned as a gift to the client's yet-unborn niece and her sister, who had walked down the aisle at her wedding to this song. The client requested soft watercolors in the form of pink peonies and blue hydrangeas, which were in her sister's bouquet. I even owe the calligraphy style to the client. Initially, the style was flowery, and though I still like the original, it was too flowery; it almost competed with the flowers rather than accenting them. The final calligraphy, which the client requested, is much lighter, feminine and airy without clamoring for attention above the watercolor. This is the benefit of getting to work with another artist! (This friend is also a talented photographer).
I don't know about you, but I was deeply touched by significance and thoughtfulness of such a gift; I can only aspire to be such an attentive gift-giver, sister, or friend. And as a daughter, I can imagine how thankful I would be growing up to have this as a keepsake!
